Newton got off to a blistering start in this local derby against Kingsteignton, and from the start had a free kick just outside the 18yrd box, Jamie Clifford with the free kick sent it around the wall at some pace to force the keeper into making a very responsive save. That was just a warning of what's to come!
Our first goal came on 12mins, a bit of a fluke some might say, but it gave us the kick-start on our tally to come. It was a long ball from Lee Fletcher hoping to find Steve Brent, but the ball was too long for Steve, dropping just in front of the advancing King's keeper, but the bounce caught him out with outstretched arms and trickled over the line. 0 - 1.
Steve Brent made up for not scoring the first goal by tucking a nice one away on 21mins, it was good through ball from Chinky down the middle to find Steve unmarked, but had to stave off two defenders to put the ball away at an acute angle by the left post. 0 - 2.
The score line stayed at two to us at the break, but could have been doubled had it not been for some remarkable saves from the King's keeper.
HALF TIME 0 - 2.
With the second half under way playing down hill with the wind and rain in our faces, we seamed to have better control of the ball and was always a constant threat to the Kingsteignton goal, although they did rattle our far upright post early on just after the break.
Dave Crowhurst who had just returned to the side after an absence gave us our third goal on 58mins, a good solo run down the right to beat two defenders and slot in past the keeper. 0 - 3.
From the restart and just a minute later we gave away a penalty with what you might call a Newton sandwich with a Kingksteignton filling, with the resulting spot kick sending Shadi the wrong way. 1 - 3.
Our fourth goal came on 70mins, Jamie Clifford won the ball just inside the King's half and ran on to dribble his way past just about every blue shirt on the park with a brilliant finish into the back of the net. 4 - 1.
With just 11mins remaining Jamie doubled his tally to beat the off side trap. It was a long ball down the middle with a well timed run, left him on his own with just the keeper to beat with a Ronaldo finish.
FINAL SCORE: KINGSTEIGNTON ATH RES 1. NEWTON UTD 5.
To sum up: A good game to watch from the shelter of the elements in the grandstand, everyone played as a team and the passing of the ball in the wind and the rain was spot on. Shadi in goal, outstanding, the back four, outstanding and the rest just played their socks off and were rewarded with well taken goals.
M.O.T.M. Someone on the pitch did sparkle the eyes of the Kingsteignton manager as did others, but with Jamie Lock in defence having a good game also that contributed in our result at the end of the day. JAMIE LOCK
